Still Here…

Hey guys.  It’s been a week, so I thought I’d better just let you know that I haven’t gone back into hiding. It’s been a busy week, so I haven’t been able to do much with AZIndex except for getting back up to speed with it. It’s amazing how much you can forget in a year :-). The good news seems to be that the plugin is still working well on the latest version of WordPress (2.9.2) although I have noticed a small bug in the CSS code for grouped entries, where the headings are being displayed on the same line as the subheadings, when they should appear above them. This is being caused by a missing “float:left” in the CSS.

If you are seeing this problem, to work-around it, simply turn on the custom CSS option and change the following line:

.azindex .head {font-weight:bold;}

to

.azindex .head {font-weight:bold; float:left;}

Once I have read through all the comments to see what other issues people are having I’ll probably upload a new (minor) version of AZIndex with this fix, and any other minor bug fixes that might be necessary.

Finally, I am aware that WordPress 3.0 is just around the corner. I haven’t tested AZIndex on it yet, but I guess that with any major version change there is an increased risk of plugin breakage. I will be testing AZIndex before the 3.0 is official, but if anyone has already tried the plugin on the 3.0 beta code, it would be great to have some feedback.

    • Further to this and maybe other problems with this plugin, it’s great when it’s working but if you move your site or if your site is not setup correct you may struggle to get it working. If you install it and setup and index but see a blank page or the error;

      } else if (function_exists(“mb_substr”)) {

      First exchange the line to in the file indicated;

      } else if (function_exists(“mb_substr”) && function_exists(“mb_strtoupper”)) {

      If that doesn’t work, make sure you have the ownership of the site correct. If you use a dedicated server or VPS for example it’s easy to slip and create a site with owner “root”.

  • Hi there,
    first of all: GREAT JOB MAN!

    I’d like to thank you for your great work with this plugin… it’s just what I was looking for since I start my site with some friends, we have a lot of books’ reviews and we need a way to clearly navigate through ’em.

    So thank you so much.

    Now, I’ve got a question: what if I’d like to sort my index for a custom taxonomy? is there a way to do that easily? I hope it was just a matter of create it and then I’ll find it in that drop list but it doesn’t happened.

    So I’m asking your help for this.

    Thanks in advance for your attention.

    And thank you again for your awesome work!

    See ya.

  • Hi Mike !

    This is great stuff, many thanks for sharing !!

    I’m doing some customization using new WordPress “Custom post” feature. I have my own post type created, searchable, linkable … and now I’d like to AZIndex it.

    Would you be so nice to help me out directing me to the code part when I should need to change from “normal post” to “custom post” in order to make the Index? I’ll send you back my code when I have things working, of course.

    Many thanks !!

  • Good day
    my site in two languages.
    AZIndex connects the headers of posts. It’s not very nice.
    can I fix it?
    thanks

    The feedback page’s comment thread seems to have been closed (or at least I couldn’t find where to post a comment) so I have a suggested feature that seems like it would be rather quick & easy to implement.

    It would be great if you were to add “URL/Permalink” to the “Index Subheadings” drop-down since I’d like to utilize the “Group items with the same heading under one main entry (subheadings must be selected)” option, but nothing from the existing subheading options would differentiate between the pages & using custom fields are less than ideal.

    I was thinking something like this would be simple enough:
    About Us
    /about-us/
    /international/about-us/

    I’m currently doing this after the fact via JavaScript, but it would be great to have as a native feature. I love your work on this plugin and would love to see this capability added in. Thanks.

  • Is there a way to have category specific coloring on index pages?

    This seems like a simple thing to do, but I can’t get it figured out. I would like the title color of posts be dependent on which category they are in.

    For example, post 1 is in category a; so the title should be green. Post 2 is in category b, so the title color should be red.
    Is this possible? What am I missing here? This is what I have to get it working for everything but my azindex pages. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

    Example,
    .category-stingers .entry-title a { color:green; }
    .category-non-stingers .entry-title a { color:red; }
    .category-unknown .entry-title a { color:orange; }

    Thanks!

    • Where can i get a wordpress pilgun that handles college student’s profile, course, fees, department, faculty registration.Also, one that takes care of course grades?

  • This is an old post so I just wanted to be sure that the rumors of demise are STILL exaggerated. This great plugin should live on even after the creator passes on.

    This has probably been addressed, but I am trying to figure out how to show results when you click on a letter, for that letter only. Click on “A” get results beginning with “A” only.

  • That’s one of the most interesting blogs I’ve seen since I remember! Your writing is interesting and understandable – I really like the way you do it. Keep on!

  • Very nice plugin, hope you can develop it further for next WP versions, specially 3.x +. It works on those versions, only that with some bugs.

    btw, I’m launching a WordPress CMS soon and if we decide to use your plugin (even with some changes) I’ll give you a shout

  • I cannot get this to work when migrating from a Windows to Linux server. Index grouping stops working 🙁

  • Like the fresh layout. I was pleased with the information. Many thanks for the good posting.

  • I have been using the AZIndex for a while to do an alphabetical post listing and it has been great! Now I want to do a chronological index listing with the same look. Is there a way to do a sort by Published date so that it looks the same way?

    Here is my current alpha page index: http://strongdisciple.com/alphabetical-listing

    Thanks again for this great plugin!

  • using AZIndex 0.8.1 on wordpress 2.7 that was installed a few years ago by original site developer. The website is for non-profit organization, run by volunteers.

    I have no knowledge/experience with this plugin and has been working up till today, when noticed site had issue.

    AZIndex Plug Error 101 – required database table wp_bfafaz_indexes – donot exist
    deactivate then reactivate AZIndex to correct this problem

    I deactivated then reactivated plugin- got same Error

    Suggestions on how this issue can be resolved would be much appreciated.

  • Michael Grant

    This plugin does in fact seem to work on wordpress 3.x.

    It would be fantastic if this plugin could be updated to be able to use custom types and taxonomies. I can see by playing with the code that it wouldn’t be too difficult.

    Is there any active development being done on this? Can I make some code contributions?

These women are actually consequently very interested to learn all of them and already have quite simply been making the most of those things. Thank you for simply being considerably accommodating and for obtaining certain useful areas millions of individuals are really eager to be informed on. My personal honest regret for not expressing appreciation to you sooner.
